Tulips are by far one of the more popular Flowers globally, part of the Lily Family, this spring blooming flower has been cultivated since the year 1050 AD! Grown originally in Persia, and became a popularity throughout the Ottoman Empire.
Tulips became so popular in Europe, specifically amongst the Dutch in later years, that it caused the first Asset bubble to collapse, at one point the price of Tulips went above 10 times their normal price due to what's now referred to as "Tulip Mania".
Today, Tulips are grown and sold worldwide, with the Netherlands being the highest producer of Tulips across the globe, selling over 3 Billion Tulip Bulbs each year.
Fun Facts about Tulips:
Tulip Petals are Edible, while we won't be recommending that you pick up some tulips for your salad (we don't know what nasties they're sprayed with), but if you're growing some tulips in your garden, have a nibble and it'll be reminiscent of Salad/Lettuce leaves, and will even vary by the species of Tulip.
Spend a lot of time in the air? Next time you're jetting across the Globe, keep an eye out for the Turkish Airline Planes, you'll see a familiar Tulip emblazoned on their Plane in Grey. The reason for this is the name for Tulip laleh, is the same letters as Allah, and the tulip as a result quickly became a symbol popular amongst the religion.
Tulips are so popular, there are festivals for Tulips run across the globe! Festivals can occur across The Netherlands (of course), England, Switzerland, Canada, USA & Australia, where we celebrate the Tulip in September and October.
Traditionally Tulips are planted in the Summer, leading to them being cultivated in late winter, early Spring. However, you may see them coming into your bouquets from Flowers Gold Coast a bit early, as our Tasmanian growers have developed a way to grow them out of season so they are available most of Autumn and Winter.
